As we collectively embrace more sustainably generated energy, we are also faced with new challenges—chief among them, maintaining the balance of the power grid. One direct consequence is the emergence of negative energy prices, which can significantly increase costs for owners of energy production installations. A viable solution to this problem is curtailment.
Curtailment is about aligning energy supply with demand.
During periods of intense sun or wind—when energy production exceeds consumption—the power grid can become unbalanced. This imbalance often leads to negative energy prices, where producers are effectively paying to generate electricity. To avoid this scenario, producers of renewable energy—such as wind turbines and solar farms—can temporarily reduce their output, helping to stabilize the grid and mitigate financial losses.
Eniris is a pioneer in the application of curtailment.
We forecast energy production in real time and apply curtailment when necessary to prevent overproduction. To enable this, Eniris developed the SmartgridOne controller—a solution designed to ensure grid stability while maximizing efficiency for energy producers.
The Smartgrid Controller is a device that can be directly connected to a wide range of energy systems—such as inverters, batteries, heat pumps, charging stations, and energy meters. It manages these systems intelligently based on a selected control strategy. Curtailment is one of the available strategies.
When energy is being fed back into the grid during periods of negative energy prices, the Smartgrid Controller will partially or fully reduce the output power of the solar installation to prevent financial losses and support grid stability.
Thanks to our partnership with Yuso, Greenchoice and Edmij you can also apply curtailment on the imbalance market.
This market offers even greater financial benefits compared to the EPEX SPOT market.
