Eniris & Eneco

Untapped potential

The energy company claims that the nearly 150,000 home batteries in Flanders are currently underutilized, while if used efficiently, they could free up space on the power grid comparable to a 1-gigawatt nuclear power plant.

According to Eneco, the fact that home batteries in Flanders are not being used optimally is due to the low number of dynamic energy contracts. Only 0.3 percent of Flemish people have a contract in which the energy price varies every hour, while, according to the energy supplier, it is precisely these contracts, in combination with smart control of home batteries, that can ensure that surplus electricity is stored.

With increasing amounts of renewable energy, there is also a growing need for flexibility in our system. At present, home batteries are not yet being used optimally for this purpose,' says Joannes Laveyne, energy expert at Ghent University.

Automatic control

Eneco's offering includes a Sigenstor home battery from Sigenergy and the Eneco Control Box. This smart controller optimizes energy efficiency and cost savings through a combination of real-time consumption data, solar panel production, weather information, and energy market prices.

Thanks to Eneco's smart control and cashback, an average family saves around €600 extra per year. The energy company bases this on a home battery with a storage capacity of 5 kilowatt hours.

Cashback

The smart control system works independently of the energy supplier, so consumers who purchase the home battery from Eneco are not obliged to sign an energy contract. However, non-Eneco customers will miss out on the annual cashback.

This amounts to up to €250 per year for a variable contract and up to €100 for a fixed or dynamic contract. This amount is guaranteed for the first three years, and from the fourth year onwards, the compensation is adjusted based on actual savings.

Costs have fallen sharply

Thanks to the cashback, Flemish consumers can recoup the cost of their home battery in just seven years on average, according to Eneco. “The cost of home batteries has fallen sharply, with prices for a smart battery ranging between €5,000 and €10,000,” says Tom Defruyt, Innovation Manager at Eneco.

“With a customized home battery and smart control—not just for self-consumption—we are now seeing payback periods of 6 to 8 years.”
