Smart energy management for Smart Homes of the future:
LocationBelgium
Project StartFebruary 2021
Project partner*Confidential*
With this project, we and our partner strive to realize the “next step” in energy efficiency and economy for (smart) groups of homes (apartment buildings, residential areas, etc.).
Goals: Realizing a strong improvement in energy efficiency and a decrease in energy costs as a result of optimized control & distribution of solar energy for (smart) apartment buildings.
I. Development of combined smart grid software control & distribution for +10 different energy technologies
II. 25% improvement in energy efficiency through optimal control & distribution of power.
III. 20% cost savings through improving the energy efficiency system.
Project Summary
Components of the energy system:
Apartment building with 8 units
Annual energy consumption: 14200 kWh per year (4 couples [2350kWh/year] and 4 single residents[1200 kWh/year]) + consumption of common areas XXXX
-Number of energy techniques: +10
-solar panels on the roof (14x 260 Wp) (common)
-battery system (common)
charging stations (shared)
-swimming pool (shared)
individual energy technologies specific to each unit (washing machine, dishwasher, thermostat, HVAC,…)
In addition to allowing all kinds of energy technologies to work together within one household, the smart grid controller allows energy to be spread among other households within a group. Think of an apartment building with solar panels, heat pumps, lighting, charging stations and smart household appliances.

With this project, we and our partner strive to realize the “next step” in energy efficiency and economy for residential (smart) homes.
Goals: Realizing a strong improvement in energy efficiency and a decrease in energy costs as a result of optimized solar energy control in combination with aspects of a residential Smart Home.
I. Development of combined smart grid software control for 8 different energy technologies.
II. 20% improvement in energy efficiency through optimal current control.
III. 17% cost savings through improving energy efficiency system.
Project Summary
Components of the energy system:
Residential home of a family with 2 young children
-Annual energy consumption: 3000 kWh per year
-Number of energy techniques: 8
solar panels on roof (7 x 260 Wp)
-battery system (10 kWh)
-connection to the distribution network
EV charging station
Washing machine
-dishwasher

HVAC (heating, cooling & ventilation)
The integration of battery systems is already the solution to meet the challenges associated with the intermittent nature of renewable energy production from PV or wind. However, there is currently an increasing trend in introducing new energy elements within the residential energy system. Just think of the rise of electric cars and the installation of charging stations. Or the evolution of Smart Homes where all kinds of household appliances & systems can be connected to the internet via IoT and controlled remotely. The next step in energy efficiency is now to have these separate technologies work together as one well-oiled whole. One mutually communicating system of different energy technologies that is fully tailored to the availability of renewable energy. In addition to a strong optimization of energy consumption, this also results in a reduction in energy costs for the household.
This challenge falls entirely within the scope of Smart Grid One. Our innovative smart grid controller allows all kinds of energy technologies to be linked, communicated and controlled via underlying software.
